Virtual Race Mode

Learn how map-based challenges work and how to calculate the right race distance using daily averages.

Updated yesterday

Turn your challenge into a journey with maps, milestones, and visual progress

Virtual Race Mode transforms movement into an adventure. Instead of focusing only on totals or streaks, participants “travel” across a virtual map as they accumulate distance. Think: walking across London, hiking the Appalachian Trail, or trekking a city-to-city path — all mapped to their real-world activity.

It’s one of the most immersive and motivating ways to run a challenge, especially for visual learners and milestone-driven participants.

🎯 What Virtual Race Mode Measures

Virtual Race Mode measures total individual distance — synced from participants’ devices throughout the challenge.

Participants move along the map as they log distance in real life.

Each bit of progress unlocks more of the route.

📏 What Goal You’ll Set

You’ll choose a total individual distance goal, such as:

  • 50 miles

  • 75 miles

  • 100 miles

This goal defines how long the map route is and how far each participant must go to “finish” the race.

📐 How to Choose the Right Distance

Formula

Total Distance = Daily Miles × Challenge Days

Baseline

2–5 miles/day
(3 is the happy medium)

Examples

  • 14 days × 2.5 miles = 35 miles

  • 30 days × 3 miles = 90 miles

🧠 How Scoring Works

Virtual Race Mode is straightforward:

  • Participants’ real-world distance fills their progress bar

  • Map progress updates automatically

  • Participants “finish” when they reach the total distance goal

  • A leaderboard shows who’s traveled the farthest or completed the race fastest

Even after crossing the finish line, participants can continue moving and accumulating distance.

📝 Example Setup

  • Map: City Run

  • Goal: 75 miles

Most admins choose between 2–5 miles/day depending on the challenge length.

💡 Best For

  • Groups who enjoy visual progress

  • Story-based challenges

  • Tours, treks, seasonal themes

  • Longer challenges (21–45 days)

  • Challenges with mixed fitness levels

Participants love seeing the route unfold — especially when paired with friendly competition or milestones.

🧩 Pro Tip: Stack It With…

  • Leaderboard → Adds competitive ranking to the race

  • Streak → Rewards daily consistency while moving across the map

  • Team Virtual Race → Turn the journey into a team adventure

Stacking modes boosts both engagement and inclusivity by appealing to multiple motivation styles.
