Individual Leaderboard Mode

A breakdown of how ranking works, what’s measured, and how to run a high-energy, competitive challenge.

Simple, motivating competition that rewards total movement

Leaderboard Mode is a Stridekick classic — straightforward, high-energy, and perfect for sparking friendly rivalry.

Instead of focusing on a daily goal or a shared finish line, participants climb the leaderboard by logging the highest total steps, minutes, or distance during your challenge.

If your group loves a bit of competition and everyone is at a similar level of activity, this mode delivers instant engagement. However, there are some reasons you might not want to run just this challenge. We recommend checking out this article to determine whether it is best for you: Should You Run an Individual Leaderboard Challenge?

🎯 What Leaderboard Mode Measures

Leaderboard Mode tracks total individual activity across your challenge duration.

You choose the metric:

  • Steps

  • Active minutes

  • Distance

Participants are automatically ranked from highest to lowest. No goal required. Just move more to climb higher.

📏 What Goal You’ll Set

This mode is entirely rank-based, and the goal is just to be the one with the highest activity.

Admins still configure:

  • The metric you want to track

  • Optional daily activity cap

But there’s no specific target to hit.

🧠 How Scoring Works

  • Participants accumulate activity throughout the challenge

  • Totals roll into the leaderboard

  • The person with the most steps/minutes/distance wins

If participants sync late, their totals will still update — standings can shift even after the challenge ends.

This mode works especially well with groups that enjoy real-time competition or want to push themselves.

💡 Best For

  • People who enjoy pushing toward bigger numbers

  • Fitness-forward groups

  • Short, high-energy challenges (7–14 days)

  • Mixed mode challenges (pairing with Streak or Target)

Leaderboard Mode is motivating because progress is visible, immediate, and easy to understand — “move more, place higher.”

🧩 Pro Tip: Stack It With…

  • Streak → Encourages consistency AND competition

  • Virtual Race → Adds a visual storyline to the competition

  • Team Leaderboard → Turns individual competition into a team sport

Variety boosts engagement significantly, especially for mixed-fitness groups.
